Happy New Year everyone.
I am hoping that someone in this forum can help with some problems which I have been having with my Telus Internet service for a number of weeks.
I am on the 15Mbit plan (Internet15) and are using a Thompson Speedtouch modem. For my tests I have connected my computer directly to the modem via an Ethernet cable so that I can be sure that my Netgear router is not contributing to the problems.
Over the past few days a couple of different Telus engineers and contractors have been out to try to fix the problem. The 'problem' being frequent dropouts when doing large-ish (400Mbyte) downloads and major dropouts when doing relatively small uploads.
Telus found a problem with one of the lines into my house, causing a loss of 2Mbits so they switched to using another line. They also replaced the box on the outside of my house and did some rewiring so the DSL/phone split happens in outside box instead of inside my house. They suspected a problem in the DSLAM and so moved me to a new port. They have run some tests and say that the connection from the socket in my house to the DSLAM is running at 19mbits.
Telus gave me a ZyXEL VSG1432 modem-router which although not keen to swap, the ZyXEL has given me another data point as it seems to be far worse at losing the connection, especially when I run an upload test.
I have been told by the Tier2 person at Telus that my upload test may not be realistic and that I am probably expecting more from the network than is reasonable. I wondered if someone in this forum could comment..
Speedtest.net reports that I have a 14Mbit download and 800K upload, yet uploading only 5Mbytes of data can kill the connection. With the Speedtouch the drop happens for a short bursts, whereas if I use the XyXEL it drops out for a much longer period.
For the upload test I am using testmy.net. From their website I can select from a range of different data sizes up to 33Mbytes. They also offer a download test, where I can select the data set size.
What I am trying to figure out is whether it is reasonable for my internet connection to drop when I am doing a 5Mbyte upload? When I say drop, what I am doing is pinging an address (www.google.com & www.telus.net) and I see that no packets reach the destination. The tier2 guy explained that if I were using bittorrent that I can set the maximum upload rate to prevent the upload using up all my bandwidth. However, although going through a web browser, he wondered if testmy.net was doing some clever stuff to get the upload to run at the fastest possible rate, thereby saturating my connection.
For my monitoring I am using Pingplotter Standard, but a simple ping or traceroute from a dos window on my PC shows the same problem.
Is it reasonable for a 5Mbyte upload via my web browser (Chrome) to max out the upload of my connection and thereby cause all other Internet traffic (pings, downloads etc) to fail?
The other thing I wanted to mention is that Telus are going to upgrade my connection to the 25Mbits plan (Internet25) in a few days which will force me to use the ZyXEL. Telus told me that the Speedtouch does not support the VDSL protocol. Based on my experience with the ZyXEL on the current 15Mbit service it makes me extremely nervous about ditching the Speedtouch.
Thanks for your help
