I'm thinking about switching back from Shaw to Telus. The DSL internet service in my area was pretty bad when I left Telus, but I understand that it has improved a great deal now with the local fibre-connected nodes that were installed to support TV service. I don't know a lot about how the combined internet plus TV service is installed though. I hope some people here may be able to answer a few questions.
What's the minimum hardware I need for Telus internet + Optik TV? Is it a VDSL modem and at least one separate TV box?
Does the TV box connect through the internet modem? How does it connect, e.g., coax or phone line or either?
Does the Telus VDSL modem have a built-in router, and can I just bypass it to keep using my own router?
Are there any online detailed specs and photos for the equipment? (e.g., with back panel connections for the TV box)
How much does Telus need to do in the way of installation? How much do they charge, and what's my chances of getting that waived as part of a package?
Actually the phone line to my house has been cut for a year, ever since a big branch came down on it in a storm last winter. Since I'm only using cable, it didn't inconvenience me, and I don't think anyone ever even informed Telus. I guess they'll have to fix that as part of the installation!
Does anyone have some better links than the main Telus web site to official information on these topics? The Telus web site information seems to be too high level to answer these types of questions.
