[TV] Prorating of Removed Optik TV Packages
Hi, if my billing period starts/ends on the 23rd, and I remove my Optik TV Popular Sports Pack on Feb. 27th, do I get a pro-rated credit refunded back onto my account for the unused portion (Feb. 28 to Mar. 23) on my next bill? Since I already paid for the Sports Pack for the Feb. 23 to Mar. 23 timeframe in the current bill. Thanks!

Are these modem line stats "normal"?
The connection is 75 Mbps bonded.
I'm wondering specifically about the following:
Retrains
Loss of Signal Link Failure
Unavailable Seconds
Near End CRC Errors
Near End RS FEC
I had Telus at my home to investigate some issues on one of the lines, specifically, a bunch of intermittent (bursty) CRC errors on line 2. After Telus left, there were no retrains and no CRC errors for a few days, then a "burst" of two retrains with accompanying CRC errors. Those counters have been steady. The FEC errors have been creeping up steadily. They seem to be independent of the retrains and CRC errors. My home is quite far from the DSLAM.

[AB] Ethernet fine, wifi has good speed but loads extremely slowly
This is a weird issue that only started happening in the last few days. I've had Telus internet for 4 years, currently on the 150/50 fiber plan.
Nothing's wrong with my ethernet connection but my phone is basically unusable.
Attempting to access a website (any of them) on wifi just hangs forever before doing anything. Estimate around 45 seconds for a page to load. It won't even show something in the title bar during that period.
Basically it's taking a very, very, very long time to access a page and once it does, everything within that page loads fine, but if I try to go to a different website it hangs for 60+ seconds until the page loads for that website.
I ran two tests on speedof.me . The first had 16553ms latency and a 0.07/0.58 result. The second, done one minute later, was 35ms latency and 55.00/295.28 (?).
I tried switching my DNS away from google and to the standard ones Telus uses, but it didn't affect anything. Tried switching mobile browsers too.
This problem does not occur with wifi off/while on data. I'm clueless as to what's going on.

Optik TV in the USA
Hey all, so my slingbox dies last week and I had no idea Slingbox hardware had been discontinued. After doing some googling it seems there aren't any real viable alternatives to the slingbox currently either.
While I do have another slingbox on the way from amazon, this got me to thinking that at some point the slingbox will be no more and I will need a new way to watch my Canadian TV(Sports channels) in Phoenix.
Has anyone tried getting a optik box working over a VPN tunnel? I know I know i'm sure this is against the rules, but a man needs to watch his sports no matter where he is, So I am going to take a run at this on the weekend while in Phoenix. This isn't any different than using my slingbox in my opinion.
Anyways i've got 2 mini pfsense boxes on the way: https://www.netgate.com/solutions/pfsense/sg-1000.html
I'm thinking a open VPN tunnel bridged to LAN on both sides with the IGMP proxy enabled to do multicast and I should be set.
If anyone's tried this before please let me know, reply or pm. Thanks!

Fibre ONT and using two ports?
Hello,
I had TELUS fibre installed last year. I'd like to run the Actiontec separate from my regular traffic. I do not want to use bridge mode on the Alcatel (also it won't work well as a wireless TTV access point from this location at the demarcation point in my home). I want to connect my EdgeRouter into the ONT directly.
Anyway the other three ports on the Nokia/Alcatel ONT can be turned on? I know TELUS provides two public IP addresses. I could connect the ERX and the ActionTec in ports 1 and 2 and the two networks could be completely independent. My fear is if I set up multicast on the ERX it will tax the device and cause issues on other devices.
Ideas? Thoughts? Adding another switch after the ONT is another device that I'd rather not have in the mix...

TELUS Public Wifi Picocell Setup
I posted a while back about TELUS having installed a couple picocells in our building. These provide both public wifi (#TELUS) and are picocell sites. I'm on Koodo and they do increase our cell signal considerably in parts of the building that had significant trouble with cellular coverage. They don't have enough power to do much outside of a couple floors but they do help in higher traffic areas where many people had trouble accessing internet on their cellular devices.
TELUS has told me they are currently provisioned with 250Mbps symmetrical and I have run a couple cellular speed tests. In the previous-deadzones I can now pull over 100Mbps on cellular. #TELUS Wifi however is still capped at 10Mbps (which I think sucks). Also, Telus' public wifi could really take a page from Shaw's book and let us log in with our accounts and add devices so you're not having to re-register so often.
The units themselves are Huawei BTS3911B from what I've gathered.

[BC] Anyone had problems with the T3200M?
I got my fibre service hooked up yesterday but the internet has been very fast but intermittent.
Wireless will work for a while but then it will just randomly crap out. When I go to my desktop internet doesn't work there either. I found disabling ipv6 makes it last longer but it will still eventually crap out.
The lights (internet & wifi) stay on/lit during this whole time. Resetting the T3200M makes it come back and it'll be OK for a while.
I've read about the firmware update requiring a factory reset, so I've done that thinking the firmware probably updated. However, it worked about 1.5 hours and just a few minutes ago I had to reset it again.
The firmware shown is 31.164L.08, is that the most current? Anyone else have tips before I call in to Telus?

250/250 in Red Deer?
Just wondering if there is anyone in (or know anyone) Red Deer that has been able to get 250/250? I have 150/150 Fibre and it is great for about 99.5% of the time but from what I understand there is only a $5 difference and would be nice to use as some apps (steam) will max it out and start glitching other inet activities. Yes I know I could throttle steam...but I don't want to lol.

[AB] Telus IGMP settings changed?
After working perfectly for the past 1 1/2 years (with 8 months of uptime until today) my TTV multicast inexplicably stopped working sometime in the last 36 hours. Anyone else with port1 bridge and their own router had any difficulties recently? Everything works fine plugged directly into the T3200 so my next task (after more coffee) is digging out a switch that supports port mirroring and grabbing a wireshark capture to see if there's anything obvious.
Basic info incase anyone is interested:
T3200>EdgerouterX>Separate TV VLAN on switch>STB
Firewall rules and IGMP proxy in place for 10.0.0.0/8 and 207.0.0.0/8 (some posts mentioned 209.0.0.0/8, which I added, but no difference).

[BC] Coastal fibre backhaul build (not Telus)
Connected Coast project.
For those stuck with slow data speeds in rural coastal communities, some relief on the way. Up to 5 years and article doesn't specify if it will be fibre to the home, or other means to the end users. The main selling point is to bring in enough data capacity to handle modern communication technology.
Provided by two separate entities in two sections: CityWest and Strathcona: A new fibre backbone (under water) coming up from Vancouver and Prince Rupert (tie into) and up the coast to Bella Coola, Haida Gwaii, and other remote coastal locations, while also ringing Vancouver Island.

https://www.coastmountainnews.com/news/bella-coola-to-benefit-from-massive-investment-in-coastal-internet/
Jan 18 2018
Dubbed the “Connected Coast,” the project includes includes new subsea fibre optic cable – a total of 3.5 million metres – provided by two separate entities in two sections: CityWest and Strathcona. The CityWest section will service from Prince Rupert over to Haida Gwaii and along the central coast to Bella Coola. The Strathcona section will service the entire circumference of Vancouver Island as well as the mainland communities to the east.
CityWest, a telecommunications company based in Prince Rupert, will be constructing the section of cable that will service Bella Coola. The project is set to start in early 2018 with more detailed studies and engagement. It is anticipated to take 3-4 years to complete with phased construction.
Besides delivering higher speeds, one of the major aims of the entire project is redundancy – something that is presently lacking in many coastal and remote communities, especially Bella Coola and Bella Bella. https://archive.news.gov.bc.ca/releases/news_releases_2017-2021/2018CITZ0001-000062.htm

Through a combined investment of $45.4 million, the Government of Canada, in partnership with the Government of British Columbia, is bringing new or improved high-speed internet to 154 rural and remote communities, enabling residents to get online.
Of these 154 communities, 56 First Nations communities will benefit.
“To be global digital economy leaders today and tomorrow, we need to invest in our broadband infrastructure,” said Jinny Sims, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “By partnering with the federal government, First Nations, local governments and the private sector, we will give our rural communities the foundation to grow their economies with fast and reliable internet connections.”
The funding was announced by the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; Sims, and Jennifer Rice, British Columbia Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Member of the Legislative Assembly for the North Coast, at Canada Place in Vancouver.
“Access to high-speed internet is not a luxury; it’s essential,” said Bains. “High-speed internet service is a basic tool that all Canadians should have access to, regardless of their postal code. Canadians need this service to do business, upgrade their education and build stronger communities. Thanks to our Connect to Innovate program, more Canadians will able to participate fully in the digital economy.”
“Broadband internet is critical to ensuring quick and reliable access to educational resources, economic development opportunities and telehealth services,” said Philpott. “The federal government is proud to partner with the Province, First Nations, local communities and the private sector to bring high-speed Internet to unserved and underserved communities, including 44 First Nations, in British Columbia.”
This investment will help residents of these communities connect with family and friends, do business online, participate in distance education and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the digital age. It will also help connect schools, hospitals, libraries and businesses to networks that are essential to their services.
“Connectivity is foundational to Indigenous peoples leading and thriving in a digital age,” said Denise Williams, executive director of First Nations Technology Council. “Projects such as this play an important role in addressing the urgent need to achieve full and equitable access, unlocking the potential of the digital domain for generations to come.”
“Reliable high-speed connectivity is critical for rural and remote communities to develop their business opportunities, services and community potential,” said Joel McKay, chief executive officer of Northern Development Initiative Trust. “The trust is incredibly proud to be a partner in the delivery of this program, supporting the investments the Province and Government of Canada are making in this infrastructure.”
Today’s investment includes new subsea fibre optic cable that will connect communities between Prince Rupert and Vancouver, as well as around Vancouver Island - a total of 3.5 million metres of cable. Thanks to this investment in high-capacity networks in remote and underserved communities, all British Columbians, including First Nations, will be able to fully participate in the digital economy.
Quick Facts:
Connect to Innovate is a program that aims to provide Canadians in underserved communities with access to high-speed internet by investing in backbone networks, upgrading capacity and extending access.
Of the $45.4 million invested in coastal British Columbia:
$22 million will come from the Connect to Innovate program;
$12 million will come from Indigenous Services Canada; and
$11.4 million will come from the Government of British Columbia, through the Connecting British Columbia program.
The organizations receiving funding are:
CityWest Cable and Telephone—$9.3 million from the federal government and $3.1 million from the Government of British Columbia to improve high-speed internet service for 23 communities and 97 institutions
Strathcona Regional District—$24.6 million from the federal government and $8.4 million from the Government of British Columbia to improve high-speed internet service for 131 communities and 63 institutions
The $45.4 million in funding is for backbone networks that will bring fibre optic cable to 154 communities, connect institutions and indirectly improve internet connections for an important number of households along the British Columbia coast.
The joint $45.4 million investment provides funding to two recipients – CityWest and Strathcona Regional District to install a new sub-sea fibre-optic cable from Prince Rupert to Vancouver with landings at multiple coastal communities along its route.
List of communities that will benefit from investment in the Connected Coast project
https://news.gov.bc.ca/files/Connected_Coast_Locations_Regional_District.pdf
The Government of Canada’s Connect to Innovate program is investing $500 million to go toward building the digital backbone of high-speed internet networks. Backbone networks are the digital highways that move data in and out of communities. These highways carry large amounts of data that are essential for schools, hospitals, libraries and businesses to function in a digital world.
Connect to Innovate will also fund last-mile connections to households that do not have high-speed internet.
Connect to Innovate is part of the Government of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, a multi-year strategy to create well-paying jobs for the middle class.
