Fun with Fiber

I had a free upgrade from 50mb copper to 100/20mb fiber last friday. Install was so-so, the tech didn't like my setup (pfsense firewall to a managed switch to the Alcatel I-240G-B ont). The upgrade was free as the $10 difference was addressed with bundling my cell service. Day 1 was still on 50mb but online Day 2 had 100mb download but 10mb upload Day 3 was 100mb/20mb and good Day 4 I don't know, speeds dropped to about 20/20 and pings fluctuated between 30ms and 1000ms. It's finally 100/20mb again with stable pings: (This private IP is over a VPN far away) 64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=6 ttl=63 time=16.8 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=7 ttl=63 time=34.1 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=8 ttl=63 time=34.5 ms Telus didn't know why the speed/ping changed. I can guess at the following: I moved the modem and placed it vertically. It seemed much warmer after this and the fiber cable may have been bent too much. It's now horizontal with more space on the fiber cable for a larger radius bend. Best speed tests are around 105/25. I reseated the fiber cable a couple times on the ont. It's a single fiber, the connector is pretty stiff and the screw down terminal doesn't sit at a perfect 90 degree when engaged. I wish it were a very positive connection the way 1/10GB SFPs are... but all is well now. If others find strange speed/latency issues and telus has no ideas, you can try: 1) Placing the modem horizontally for potentially better airflow 2) Ensuring the fiber cable is not on small radius bends 3) Reseat the fiber cable, clean it with a dry lint free substance Funny comment from telus: "if you remove the fiber cable, there will be lots of tiney fiber strands everywhere". lulz.
