I've had Telus Optik for about a year and a half and am satisfied with the solution...except...
I have a QNAP TS-419 II Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit that I use to store files and media. It works great on the home network. I have spent numerous hours trying to setup port forwarding so that it can be accessed external to the home network. The router is an Actiontec v1000H with firmware 31.30L.55.
I first tried using the automated uPnP router configuration from the NAS. I know uPnP has an issue with stability on the this router. Sometimes I would try the auto-configuration and the NAS would report success, sometimes it would fail. Regardless, no Firewall changes were visible and external access would not work.
The second approach was to forward the following ports to the NAS IP (192.168.1.11):
Web-based system management - 8080
FTP - 21
Passive FTP - 55536 - 56559
Web Server - 80
Download Station (BitTorrent download) - 6881-6999
Remote replication (Rsync) - 873
Telnet - 13131
SSH - 22
SSL - 443
SMTP 25
Samba - 445
MySQL - 3306
TwonkyMedia - 9000
Plex - 32400
I setup all the port forwarding rules and the Actiontec shows them as active. Again, external access to the NAS does not work on any port. I tried a port scan and all ports show up as closed.
The final attempt was to move the NAS IP to the DMZ. Again, external access to the NAS does not work. I tried a port scan and all ports show up as closed.
What else can I try? I know Telus blocks all Internet access to some ports, but at the very least I would expect ports like 9000, 32400 and 6881 to be openable. If I cannot resolve this, I will be forced to try Shaw as external access to the NAS is vital.
Telus Tech Support has not been helpful with this issue. I wasted $60 on a Premium Support case and got nowhere.
