Providing this so that if others get calls from Telus on the need to upgrade because 3G network support is going away you ask if you have a primary Internet connection and the 3G is a backup. Also ask for a date when Telus will be shutting down their 3G network.
I've received many phone calls and registered letters saying I needed to upgrade my old ADT system because the 3G network will be shutting down eliminating my connection to Telus. This is incorrect. My 3G network connection is a backup connection if my Internet connection is not available. I finally got an escalation manager to admit this. This has not changed the campaigns that only address loss of the 3G and does not acknowledge customers may have a primary Internet connection.
Is the 3G network in Canada going away? Likely sometime in the future but the last time I checked, none of the major cell phone carriers had announced a end-of-life date. This includes Telus. There are more commercial uses of the 3G network other than cell phones so there are other impacts other than loss of phone calls on old devices.
My system also can't be upgraded and I'm looking at a $1,200 replacement cost. Seems funny they can't just replace the cellular notification component.
I was able to get Telus to cease and desist in contacting me but it has started again. My wife was home and Canada Post came to the door with a registered letter. They wouldn't let her sign for it. I'm not making another trip to Shoppers to pick up the letter saying I need to upgrade.
