After being on wireless ISP for 10+ years we finally got something better offered in our area, as luck would have it, it's telus purefibre.
I just got it installed a few days ago and am trying to decide on how I want my home LAN to work now, ie. just use Telus router (NH20A) or use my own (linksys WRT3200ACM) that I have flashed with DD-WRT v3.0
Along with the NH20A I got a Boost wifi 6 unit, which I assume is just an AP with a 2 port switch built in. I recently moved it to one of my 5 switches to a better location as the tech just plugged it into the NH20A in my basement.
I have decided I want my Linksys router first in line, so I don't lose all my customizations like having 2 of my older dd-wrt routers connected to it as wireless bridge AP & wired bridge AP, time restrictions etc.
I also want to create a VLAN on it to put new IoT devices on, and probably VPN (Nord) on the router itself instead of my workstation now that I have a fast enough connection.
The tech told me that if I want to use my own router (he recommended not to) I just plug it into the NH20A. Currently I have a cat6 cable going from NH20A to my closest switch and have my router reconfigured as a switch, but I'd like to swap places with the switch and have the router first in line and have it as a router again.
My home network consists of 3 TV's with various media players & blu rays, all ethernet connected, 2 - 3 ethernet connected workstations, a couple of macbooks that connect wifi, one wifi Roku, & the usual assortment of phones, ipads, tablets etc.
The fibre from outside is connected to a Nokia box with 4 free ports in it, can I connect my router to it? Or do I need to connect to the NH20A? I read somewhere Telus only has one port active, but I don't know if that is the case for the Nokia box - is it the ONT?
If I connect to the NH20A, do I connect as a bridge/AP? Can/should I bypass the NH20A?
If I can use both the NH20A and my own router off the Nokia unit, then I could have 2 separate physical networks right? One for TV's etc, and one for PC workstations.
Thanks in advance!
