Telus finally got around to stringing fibre to the demarc box on my house last week, and they're already making me an offer to switch back from cable. But I have a few questions about how this installation is going to work - maybe someone in this forum can clarify? The official Telus information is pretty sparse.
So I read that Telus is going to give me an ONT box that receives the fibre optic cable on one side, and converts to "copper" on the other side - by "copper" do they mean ethernet, or is there some other option?
From what I can see the ONT box is meant to be installed inside and uses a standard 120vac power brick for power. I'm thinking they could put the fibre cable through my garage wall and mount the ONT box on the inside garage wall right there - but then they would need to string about 18' of ethernet cable through the garage attic to get to the office where the modem was installed in the past, and presumably a modem+router is still needed for Optik TV+internet service.
Or would they try to string fibre all the way to the office and put the ONT on the wall of the office. That's a lot uglier than keeping it on the interior garage wall next to the breaker panel. It's pretty much the same cable run either way - just a choice of where to convert from fibre to ethernet.
