Just bought a new house and I'm getting my gear ready to install for when we move in.
I have an Asus RT-AC87U and two Asus GX-D1051 switches currently.
The 87U will be hooked up in the basement next to the fibre drop. There are three ethernet cables run to the basement as well. One each in living room, bonus room, master bedroom.
I plan to hook the two switches up to the living room and bonus room.
The wireless coverage on the 2nd floor will be spotty. I am looking at either the Asus RT-AC68U or another RT-AC87U to serve as the access point on the 2nd floor in the master bedroom.
My question is this: The dedicated access point 68U is $240 for 3x4 AC1900. The 87U is 200 for 4x4 AC2400.
Why is the AP more than the router? The 87U has full access point capabilities.
Is there a significant power usage or lifespan difference? Can anyone please shed some light on this for me?
Also, is this a pretty decent setup or am I going about this the wrong way?
