Porting out phone number without disrupting DSL service

So I recently got onto the VOIP bandwagon. I currently have a landline and DSL service (50Mb bonded) with Telus. I'd like to port my phone number out to my VOIP provider with no/minimal downtime to the DSL service. From what I have read of other phone/DSL providers (Bell) if I call in to terminate the landline before getting the number port request in, the number will be put into an "on hold" status that makes it problematic for the porting process. But if I don't call in to cancel the landline and/or request a dry loop number for the DSL line prior to porting out my number then I run the risk of having no internet for an indeterminate amount of time while I call Telus and try to get them to assign a dry loop number for the DSL service. Has anyone gone through this process before and offer up any advice or experience? I did do a search and found a few threads from 2009-2010 but none cover my exact scenario.
